Artist statement

I create handwoven textiles from natural materials, using rhythm, repetition and geometric structure. I am drawn to the organisation and precision of weaving, where repeated gestures accumulate into a whole and create a depth I can lose myself in.

Taking a textile off the frame is when this begins to change. Tension releases, the form loosens and parts of it can fall or extend in unexpected ways. At this point, I have to decide whether to intervene or let the textile remain as it is. What began as a desire for control has gradually become an acceptance of what cannot be fully determined.

I am interested in this moment of letting go, when something carefully constructed becomes less predictable.

Biography

Mathilde Felter is a French-British textile artist. She began her career in London, working with fashion designers including Wales Bonner, Richard Quinn and Charles Jeffrey, creating embroidery and screen printing for their shows. After four years working in fashion, she left the industry to focus on her own practice, which developed into weaving. She lives and works in the South of France.
